In a hydronic heating system, a boiler heats water that generates heat as hot water or steam. It travels through a network of pipes to baseboard heating units, in-floor radiant pipes or radiators that release the heat into your rooms.

If you’re looking for an efficient and reliable way to keep your property warm all winter, hot water boilers are an excellent option and, we think, preferable to forced-air heating systems. If you have an existing steam heat system with radiators, it uses a steam boiler.

Advantages of boilers

Boilers are highly regarded for their durability and lifespan. Because boilers have relatively few moving parts, they are less prone to breaking down and are generally easier and cheaper to repair than other types of heating systems. They also have long lifespans, often lasting over 20 years, so once you have a good boiler in place, you know you can rely on it for many years to come — as long as you keep up with routine maintenance.

If you have allergies, boilers are a good way to keep the level of allergens down. Other heating systems distribute heat by forcing air through a system of duct work. Along with distributing heat, forced air also circulates dust and other indoor air contaminants. Because boilers circulate hot water through piping, rather than air through duct work, they don’t contribute to indoor air pollution.

Boiler repairs

In our region of the country, a reliable heating system is something you can’t live without. When your boiler needs repair, count on Patriot Plumbing to promptly, competently and professionally diagnose and fix the problem.

Typical repairs involve circulator pump and zone valve replacements, air removal, expansion tanks, as well as relays and thermostats, relief valves, mixing valves and many others to get your boiler up and running so you’re not without heat for long. Although it’s not always cost-effective to make repairs to an old boiler, in many cases, minor repairs can prolong the life of your unit for many years. We recommend you address any boiler problems at the first sign of trouble. If they’re not allowed to continue, most problems can be diagnosed and the parts replaced. If ignored, however, many times a minor repair can escalate to a major repair in a short time.

Oil storage tanks

Conventional heating oil storage tanks eventually need to be replaced. Although they’re designed to last 15 years, corrosive additives in fuel oil are speeding the rate of corrosion and rust, and tanks might not last that long. It’s important to replace your tank before you have a leak or, worse, a failure that winds up costing many thousands of dollars to remediate.

We’re happy to install the replacement heating oil storage tank of your choice, but Patriot Plumbing recommends you go with a Roth double-walled tank, which is backed by a 30-year warranty that includes $2 million insurance for damages resulting from a leak or spill. Constructed of leak-proof, corrosion-resistant galvanized steel on the outside, the rectangular Roth tank has a strong, durable polymer interior shell that won’t break down or contaminate your heating oil. The tank stands upright, taking up less space than horizontal tanks, with oil lines overhead so there’s no risk of tripping on them and creating a leak.
